The Hot Tub scenario
Posted on 29. May, 2011 by admin in Entertainment
Hot tubs are sizable tubs or undersized pools filled with heated water for softening the skin, recreation, massage or hydrotherapy, etc. In most instances, they have gushes for massage purposes and are normally located outdoors. They are heated using an electric or a gas heater.
You can even claim a tax deduction on a hot tub, if it is proved that you are actually using it as part of a medical treatment that has been authorized or recommended by your doctor. Under these circumstances, you can get a refund of the full cost of the tub only if you are using it 100% for the purposes of helping improve your medical condition.
Nonetheless, if other members of your own family and friends are also using the tub, then you may only deduct a certain percentage which will reflect the amount of time that you are using the tub for medical gain. A tax specialist is able to figure out what percentage of the full cost should be claimed.
In order to claim a tax deduction, you must have proper documentation from your doctor to support the claim; otherwise the IRS will dispute the claim even if it is realized to be true.
